In this tutorial, we will be sharing how you can manually or automatically backup and restore phone contacts, calendar and other data on your Android phone to your Google account. As long as the phone runs an Android operating system, whether a customize version (third-party ROMs e.g Cyanogen) or not, this tutorial will work for you. Android version supported includes 2.3 Gingerbread, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.2 Jelly Bean, 4.4 KitKat, 5.0 Lollipop, 5.1 Lollipop, 6.0 Marshmallow, 7.0/7.1 Nougat, and 8.0/8.1 Oreo.
What usually showed up when turning an Android phone on for the first time after the bootscreen is the Google ID login. While not all manufacturers think it is important to bombard their customers first with some sort of logins at the door step before getting to enter the main system, some do know how important it is for their users, especially those that relied heavily on Google platform in maintaining their files and data.

Among the most important files that cannot be simply ignored or lost are phone contacts and messages. Google makes these files easy to back up and restore on any Android device, and that is why most phone manufacturers prefer to put Google login at the entrance when turning on a new smartphone for the first time, making it hassle-free to get your former phone contact backup in place on your new device. This however does not applied to those that just boarded the Android platform for the first time and does not have Google ID.
For security reasons (though we think privacy reasons will best fit in), Google does not back up Android phone messages. How to register for a Google account
1st Method
- Go to https://accounts.google.com/sigNup using your PC or any mobile browsers
- Fill the registration form with the required information
- Verify your phone number (if asked)
2nd Method
- On your Android phone, go to Settings > Accounts
- Click on "Add Account"
- Select Google from the list of available accounts
- At the bottom, select "New"
- Fill the form and submit
If you already have a Google account or you used the 1st Method to register one, simply go to Settings > Account > Add Account > Google on your Android phone and login.
The first phase is over, what comes next is how to synchronize your phone contacts, calendar and other data on your Android phone to Google server and have them backed-up. This can be done in two ways, manually and automatically.

By default, after logging in into a Google account on Android, all backups are done automatically. Anytime the data connection (internet) is turn on or WiFi connection is available, the process will start. However, there are three things that can affect or delay this backup process to start automatically.
1.) Disabling/Hibernating Google Play Services: This sometimes happen when an user is trying to save data or minimize data consumption by hibernating Google Play Services with third-party applications such as Greenify.
2.) Restricting Google Play Service Background Data under Settings > Data Save can hinder this process.
3.) Disabling "Backup my data" in Settings > Backup & Reset
If auto backup is somehow unavailable, the backup can be done manually as long as there is a data connection. Follow the steps below.
- On your Android phone, go to Settings > Accounts
- Select your Google account from the list of registered accounts
- You should see your registered Google account address, click on the menu (three vertical dots represent this on some phones) at the top-right corner and select "Sync now"
Now that you have perfectly setup Google backup on your Android phone, all you need to do is just sit back and relax while the process dance to your command.
How to restore backup contacts and data on a new Android phone
Restoring backup contacts and other data on a new phone is easy. As we already said, some phone manufacturers like to placed Google login after the bootscreen when turning on a new Android smartphone for the first time. Signing in here automatically puts your data including your backup contacts in place.
If your newly bought phone does not show the login screen when turning it on for the first time, however, you can manually restore the backup by going to Settings > Accounts > Add Account > Google > Existing.
